Personal and official correspondence. Ante-bellum letters refer to the Whig and Democratic parties; the Kansas question; the slavery controversy; abolitionists; the Mormons; and Davis's election to the U.S. Senate, 1857. The bulk of the material, covering the Civil War period, relates to secession; the formation of the Confederacy; efforts to bring about the secession of Maryland; the purchase of munitions in the North and in Europe; civil and military appointments; military operations, supplies and profiteering; conscription, exemptions from military service, and the question of using black troops; difficulties between the states and the Confederate government; foreign support of the Confederacy; and the final days of the Confederacy and the fall of Richmond. Post-war letters, chiefly personal, refer to Davis's imprisonment and release, activities in the insurance business, and reminiscences of the war.
